About Crack Depth Detector

In structural health monitoring and civil engineering inspection, evaluating concrete crack severity is critical for preventing catastrophic structural failures. While surface crack widths can be easily measured with optical or digital instruments, evaluating crack depth requires advanced Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods.

The LANGRY FS500 Crack Depth Detector leverages precise Ultrasonic Time-of-Flight (ToF) wave propagation to accurately measure concrete crack depth up to 500 mm without damaging the host structure.

Technical Working Principle
The LANGRY FS500 operates on the principle of ultrasonic acoustic wave diffraction around concrete discontinuities:

Acoustic Wave Emission: Two high-sensitivity piezoelectric transducers (43 74 mm) are positioned on opposite sides of the surface crack.
Path Diffraction: The ultrasonic signal cannot cross the air gap inside the crack; it travels around the tip of the crack through the concrete medium.

Automated First-Wave Detection: The FS500 automatically identifies the first-wave arrival time and adjusts signal amplification to eliminate background noise.

Depth Calculation: The instrument calculates crack depth (h) based on differential time-of-flight measurements across varying transducer distances.

Key Features & Advantages
High Penetration Depth: Accurately measures internal cracks reaching up to 500 mm in depth.
Automated Processing: Built-in automatic first-wave search and magnification tuning reduce operator error during field testing.
Dual Operation Mode: Ergonomic design equipped with both a touch screen and tactile buttons for versatile site usage.
Sealed Detection Area: Features a specialized detection area seal for clear transducer positioning and consistent acoustic coupling.
Integrated Analysis Software: Pairs with dedicated online analysis software for quick data export, reporting, and waveform inspection.

Field Applications & Recommended Standard Operating Procedure
The LANGRY FS500 is engineered for broad infrastructure inspection, including Bridges & Viaducts (fatigue cracks), Tunnels & Subways (lining integrity), Foundations & Dams (mass concrete elements), and Building Rehabilitation (structural assessment).

  • Surface Preparation: Clean the concrete surface around the crack to ensure optimal acoustic contact.
  • Coupling Application: Apply ultrasonic coupling gel evenly to both transducer faces.
  • Transducer Positioning: Position Transducer A and Transducer B at equal, measured distances across the crack line.
  • Data Acquisition: Initiate the FS500 first-wave auto-search function to record signal time delay.
  • Multi-Point Verification: Repeat measurements at incremental spacing intervals to confirm depth accuracy and export results via PC software.
